Associate Professor of Medicine (Physiology)
A position as Associate Professor is available at the Department of Physiology, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences.
The Department of Physiology has strong traditions in neuroscience, cardiovascular physiology and cell biology, and has a high international research profile. The Department currently has 10 Professors/Associate Professors, 6.5 laboratory engineers and a large number of postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, master’s program students and Medical Research Program students. The department employs modern research methods ranging from molecular biology and transgenic animal models to functional imaging and data modelling, spanning from cellular to systems levels. Employees have access to the department's internal facilities for histology and molecular biology procedures, and to a number of common facilities at IMB. Current research activities are focused on neurophysiology, neuroembryology, cardiovascular physiology and cellular haematology.
The advertised position is intended to strengthen physiological research at the Department of Physiology. Applicants are expected to have a solid background in physiological research and methodology. The department wishes to strengthen and develop technologies that increase insight into physiological processes spanning from the cellular to the systems level. link.The successful applicant will be expected to actively pursue and establish national and international research collaborations, attract research studentships and obtain research funding from external sources. The department as a whole has extensive national and international collaborations.
Other significant factors will include experience of research supervision, international networking skills and originality of research, ability to lead and initiate research, supervise researchers, participate in teaching students and research fellows.
The person appointed must also undertake duties in connection with examinations, as well as undertaking administrative tasks as required by the prevailing regulations.
Qualifications:- We are looking for a person with a solid background in physiological research and methodology.
- Emphasis will be attributed to team-working abilities and the ability to create an attractive research environment.
- The basis of assessment of the applicants is academic qualifications, and other professional, pedagogical and publicising qualifications, and qualifications in management and administration.
- Basic academic competence for appointments to associate professorships is provided by a Norwegian doctoral degree in the relevant subject area or an equivalent doctoral degree from abroad recognised as equal to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or competence on an equivalent level documented by academic work of the same extent and quality.
- The successful applicant who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentation of basic teaching competence must provide such documentation within two years of appointment.
- The teaching responsibilities require competence in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish. The successful applicant who does not have such competence must acquire it within two years of appointment. Competence in English is required in the interim.

Assessment by an international evaluation committee will focus on scientific, teaching, management and administrative qualifications and on dissemination of scientific knowledge to the public, with scientific qualifications being weighted most strongly. Particular weight will be attached to qualifications that are central to the announcement and job description. Applicants will be ranked on the basis of an explicit assessment of the full scope of these qualification categories.
Each applicant’s research qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of the CV and publication list, and can be further documented by submission of maximum 10 most noteworthy publications. Local interviews will be held thereafter with an emphasis on interpersonal skills, the ability to establish and maintain an attractive research environment, research plans and ambitions, and teaching competence. Applicants may also be required to give a trial lecture.
