PhD Research Fellowship in Hydrology and Cryospheric Sciences
Position as PhD Research fellow (Stipendiat SKO 1017) available at Department of Geosciences.
It is an advantage if the candidate has a good knowledge of a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish). The fellowship will be for a period of up to 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at The Department of Geosciences). Starting date as soon as possible, and no later than 1 October, 2014.No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution. The Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo comprises sections for Geology and Geophysics; Geography and Hydrology, Meteorology and Oceanography, the Centre for Earth Evolution and Dynamics (Centre of Excellence) and PGP (Center for Physics of Geological Processes). The academic staff consists of 40 professors and approximately 80 research fellows. For more information, see

Job/ project description:
The successful candidate will work within the Physical Geography and Hydrology Section oncharacterization of snowpacks at the catchment scale. The project entails collaborative research between The University of Oslo (UiO) and the Northern Research Institute (Norut) and Statkraft. The student will be located at UiO in Oslo, but will also be expected to travel to Svalbard and northern Norway for short term visits and field work.Funded by the Norwegian Research Council, the “Arctic-EO: Arctic Earth Observation and Surveillance Technologies” project is a strategic technology development activity in Norway. It is a long-term project focusing on the development of new advanced technologies for Earth observation from both satellites and UAS. Regional studies will focus on catchments in southern Norway and Svalbard. Norway relies heavily on hydropower for primary production as well as storage for renewable energy. Further, strategic investments in improved prognostic capabilities for the hydropower industry are a high priority. Snowpack characterization is critical for accurate seasonal forecasting of water resources. In addition to field deployments with the UAS, the candidate will be expected to work with state-of-the-art hydrologic and snow modeling tools using linux on the ABEL supercomputing cluster at UiO (http://goo.gl/swdkeE). The ideal candidate will have experience with Python and/or C and knowledge of large data analysis and visualization tools. Those with a particular interest in the development of embedded devices such as rasberry-Pi and otherwise are particularly encouraged to apply. Within our group you can anticipate to work in a highly collaborative environment and participate in a wide array of activities related to land-atmosphere processes with an emphasis on the cryosphere.
Requirements/qualifications:
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in hydrology, meteorology, or related with documented knowledge on hydrology, relevant for a PhD-study in the above mentioned specialties.
Candidates without a Master´s degree have until 30 June, 2014 to complete the final exam.Course work in physics and mathematics along with demonstrated excellence in programming skills and the ability to work in a highly team-oriented environment are required. You should be creative and innovative with good collaborative skills. The candidate should have a good process understanding of Earth System Science and be comfortable with modeling concepts and tools. We are seeking candidates with a strong background in quantitative methods and experience with physically-based hydrological or land surface modeling, including own programming. Demonstrated experience working with large data sets, with preference for C , Python, or R is required, preferably with experience on linux clusters. The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research training program at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a project outline (made out in cooperation with Prof. Dr. J.F. Burkhart), must be submitted no later than two months after taking up the position, and the admission is to be approved within three months. For more information see:
