The Institute of Basic Medical Sciences consists of departments and units that pursue research and education within basic medical science. The Institute has an important role nationally in basic medical research and in instructing medical students in the biomedical sciences. The Institute's overall objective is to promote basic medical knowledge in order to understand normal processes, provide insight into mechanisms that cause illness, and promote good health. The Institute is seeking a Head of its newly established Department of Molecular Medicine. This is a position combined with a Professorship at the Department of Molecular Medicine. The Professorship is permanent, while the position as Head of Department is for a fixed term of five years, with possible renewal for one more term. When ending the final term as Head of Department, the person appointed will be permanently employed full time as Professor at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences.
The Department of Molecular Medicine is a new department, established January 1, 2015, and constitutes a large and strong unit with approximately 30 research groups, covering a range of aspects of cellular and molecular biology, immunology, organ physiology, and neurosciences, with a focus on basic and translational research. The Department has three divisions: Division of Anatomy, Division of Biochemistry, and Division of Physiology. The divisions were formerly separate departments. Their activities will now be integrated in the new Department. Each division maintains a responsibility for specific areas of teaching of medical students. Research in the new Department will be organized in Thematic Research Areas, consisting of clusters of research groups from the different divisions.
The Head of Department will play a key role in the establishment and successful operation of the new Department and will be responsible for developing scientific excellence and powerful infrastructure in support of advanced medical research at the Institute. The Head of Department will actively take part in facilitating the formation of Thematic Research Areas and the evaluation and possible reorganization of the areas.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record of strong scientific achievements at professorial level in one or more of the fields of research covered by the Department, successful experiences in research leadership (in- and/or outside academia) and research support, with inspiring visions and enthusiastic leadership. He/she has abilities to initiate large collaborative projects at the international level. Broad scientific interests, from research motivated in the clinics to basic sciences, are an advantage, as well as competence in research policy and successful administrative experience. The ideal candidate has access to an international network of key scientists, and has a proven track record in achieving external research funding.
The position requires extensive leadership experience in an environment with knowledge based and innovative tasks. The Head of Department will manage financial and staffing resources for research and teaching effectively and efficiently within the assigned budget and other agreed parameters, to ensure achievement of the Institute's strategy and compliance with financial and other controls. The Head of Department has HR responsibility for Division Leaders belonging to the Department. The Head of Department is responsible to the Head of Institute and will be part of the Institute’s Management Group.
The Head of Department will demonstrate commitment to the University's Health and Safety and Environmental Sustainability policies and regulations, by making, recording and ensuring the implementation of arrangements to meet the policies and associated requirements.

In the ranking of competent applicants, the whole range of qualifications shall be considered, assessed and explicitly ascribed weight. Particular weight is placed on qualifications that are closely related to the job description as outlined above.
Interviews will be held and references collected. Applicants will also be required to give a research seminar / trial lecture.
If the person appointed is unable to document basic pedagogical competence, she/he must acquire this within two years.
