The Academy of Opera has a vacant 50% four-year position for a conductor with opera expertise from March 1st 2016. The four-year term may be renewed within an overall timeframe of 12 years after public announcement.
The Academy of Opera has the following courses:
- A two-year bachelor's course in collaboration with the Norwegian Academy of Music (2nd part of bachelor's course)
- A one-year course, with a two-year bachelor's course as a minimum entrance requirement
- A two-year master's course
The professorship covers the field of opera as a whole, with particular emphasis on musical aspects of the design of musical theatre repertoire.
Academic FieldThe professor will give students every encouragement in their efforts to achieve musical understanding by inspiring and challenging them in their artistic development.
The professor will also contribute to the development of opera education at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts by cultivating national and international academic networks. The professor will be expected to participate in the artistic debate both at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and in public, and play a part in promoting the academic activities of the Academy in Norway and abroad.
Work tasksWithin his field, the professor will be responsible for
- Teaching
- Guidance and supervision
- Musical direction of productions (including directing an orchestra/ensemble once or twice a year)
- Artistic research and development
- Knowledge dissemination
20% of the working hours will be devoted to artistic development. This implies activities in opera that lead to new insights, understanding or knowledge, or have an impact on the field. Such activities will be grounded in artistic practices, methods and critical reflection, and will be shared with other specialists and the general public.
Close cooperation with the academic staff of the Academy of Opera is necessary. This particularly applies to the development, planning and implementation of the courses. The professor is expected to participate actively in the strategic development of the Academy of Opera and contribute to the flexible use of the Academie's overall resources.
QualificationsApplicants must be able to document artistic activity of an international standard and appropriate breadth and depth in the field, as well as extensive experience as an opera conductor.
Applicants must document any practical pedagogical skills on the basis of education or teaching and mentoring. Otherwise, reference is made to the general qualification requirements stipulated in the "Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts", especially section 1-2 and section 1-4.
If the applicant has no teacher training or experience, the person appointed may be obliged to complete a course that provides a basic qualification in university college teaching.
Applicants should master one Scandinavian language as well as English written and oral.
In assessing applicants for the position, emphasis will be placed on:
- Ability to collaborate
- Organizational experience
- Experience from project work
- National and international networks relevant to KHIO's activities, particularly activities at the Academy of opera
- Written and oral presentation skills
Among the requirements for the position, emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
If no adequately qualified candidates apply for the position, the Oslo National Academy of the Arts will consider a temporary appointment of an associate professor, see the Civil Service Act, § 5. This position will be for a maximum of three years, which may not be extended. At the end of the period, the employee is entitled to be considered for appointment to an ordinary fixed-term position as professor. If the employee is not deemed qualified, the position of professor will be re-advertised.
